Final Project: Film

For our final, we needed to create a 30sec-1min long time-based work, in my case a film, using what we had learned in class. I wanted to go the route of a comedic short, and used my two friends (also in the class) as actors in my work. I wanted to create something funny, memorable, and quirky. There are several online videos that are similar in purpose, and I really enjoy watching them. So, in an attempt to follow in the footsteps of some of my favorite shorts from the internet, I came up with a quirky, untypical concept and shot it. In order to keep from having a shaky camera, I used a tripod to complete the shots.

Un-editted, raw clips from filming:

The most difficult part of my project was editing the audio, as I was directing them verbally during shooting. The people in the room also were laughing, which was caught on camera. I had to edit out the laughter and my direction, while still keeping in some sound for the slaps, etc. In order to make the background sound silent, later, I looped some audio of silence early on in the film over the clips using Adobe Premiere.

The Final Product:

Midterm

For the midterm I compiled a portfolio of my six favorite pieces done thus far in the semester. These six I believe demonstrate my style as an artist and my approach to editing, as well as showcase what I have learned confidently so far.

These three composites have no doubt been my favorite assignment throughout this entire class. I loved the pictures I worked with, and it was fun to incorporate the rule of thirds and other ideas of perspective and division into my work.

What I like about this color correction is how subtle yet important the changes made are. The differences are slight, yes, but they make a large difference in the piece like day and night.

I made the colors in this much more vibrant and removed the opaque film from the shot. While I added a bit too much blue on the after shot, it created an effect I liked so I ended up keeping it there.

This picture had a nasty blue film on it, which I attribute to the light reflecting off of the pool. I adore this one because the differences are so incredibly noticeable. One looks far more like an actual picture, while the other one looks as though someone tried to place a blue film on it in an attempt for a cool effect, but failed miserably.

Assignment: Composition

Rule of Thirds

For the assignment, we had to have one photograph that demonstrated the rule of thirds. In this one, the spider falls along the lines that divide the image, as sanctioned by this "rule."

Loneliness.

SELF PORTRAIT

SELF -PORTRAIT

This is a picture of myself while in college, which I took with my friend Sam while we were hanging out together. I like this one because it shows me in a new stage of my life, and with a friend. Friends have always been a very important part of my life and I consider them a part of who I am, making them integral to my "self portrait."

This is a picture I took back in highschool with two of my good friends after we returned from a concert. It shows my past self, the one still in high school, and the friends I had there who made me who I was.

This is a picture I took of me and my sister's hands and charm bracelets after my Graduation. Just as my friends are integral to who I am today, even more so are my family members. My family is there with me through transitions and all steps of life, like during Graduation, when this was shot. Also, my charm bracelet is made up of charms that I have gathered over my entire life, each with its own meaning and memories. In that way, the bracelet in and of itself is a "self-portrait."

IDEA

I found this on the wall of my dorm building and it looked like a bloody handprint. To me, violence always went hand in hand with rage, and red is the first color that comes to mind when I think of 'wrath.' This picture  is the idea of Rage.

I utilized my friends to help me make this shot. This picture symbolizes Friendship, with an eternal loop of support through every individual's grip. Each has a strong grip on the other while being supported each in their own way.

This one came simply to me. To illustrate the concept of Infinity, I placed two mirrors opposite each other. The reflections seem to continue on forever, as if you could reach your hand through the mirror and just keep reaching into infinity.

ENVIRONMENT

This is the view from my floor on Wolfe 5, where my dorm is.

This is a photo I took of the Cathedral in Cologne, Germany during my visit there. I was really fascinated by the statues that decorated the great building, hence my focus on them.

This image is one I took also while I was in Germany, at an old castle we visited. I love the positioning of the path in this one, and the way the castle's stone frames the shot. This is probably one of my favorite pictures I took while in Germany.

Me and My Academic Interests

What I want to learn in college:

  • Video Editting
  • Animation
  • Coding
  • Fencing
  • Japanese
  • More with Photoshop

I'm interested in seeing how this lists change as the years go on.
